Discover Kanga Take Out Restaurant

If you’ve ever driven along Victoria Park Avenue looking for something comforting, flavorful, and unpretentious, Kanga Take Out Restaurant at 1179 Victoria Park Ave, Scarborough, ON M4B 2K5, Canada, is the kind of spot that quietly wins you over. It’s not flashy, and that’s exactly the charm. From the moment I stepped in on a chilly afternoon, the aroma of grilled meats and slow-cooked stews filled the air, promising the kind of meal that sticks with you.

The first time I ordered, I went straight for their jerk chicken with rice and peas. I’ve tried Caribbean cuisine across Toronto, and I usually judge a place by the balance of heat and depth in their marinade. Here, the chicken was smoky from the grill, tender inside, and layered with spices rather than just fiery heat. According to food research published by the University of the West Indies, authentic jerk seasoning relies on a blend of allspice, thyme, and Scotch bonnet peppers for its signature profile. You can taste that traditional method here-it’s not rushed, and it’s not watered down for convenience.

What makes this Scarborough takeout joint stand out is how the menu reflects real cultural roots. Alongside jerk chicken, you’ll find curry goat, fried plantains, patties, and hearty oxtail. I once brought a friend who grew up in Jamaica, and she immediately pointed out the richness of the gravy on the oxtail. It wasn’t overly greasy, which often happens when places cut corners. Instead, it had that slow-braised texture that tells you the kitchen understands patience. Slow cooking, as culinary experts often note, allows collagen in tougher cuts like oxtail to break down properly, creating that silky finish people crave.

Portion sizes are generous without feeling excessive. On my last visit, I noticed several regulars popping in and greeting the staff by name. That says something about consistency. In the restaurant world, repeat customers are the most honest metric of quality. Reviews online frequently highlight the friendly service and reliable flavors, and from my own experience, the staff are quick to recommend dishes if you’re unsure. When I asked about their daily specials, they explained the cooking process behind the stew chicken, even describing how they brown the meat first to lock in flavor before simmering it in seasoned sauce.

The location itself is convenient for both quick lunches and casual dinners. Being right on Victoria Park Avenue makes it accessible, especially if you’re commuting through Scarborough. It’s primarily a takeout restaurant, but that doesn’t mean the food lacks care. In fact, many industry professionals argue that takeout kitchens must work even harder to maintain texture and temperature, since dishes travel before being eaten. Here, the packaging keeps sauces separate enough to prevent sogginess, and the rice stays fluffy.

Nutritionally, Caribbean dishes often get labeled as heavy, yet the reality is more nuanced. Traditional plates combine protein, legumes, and starchy vegetables, offering a balanced meal. Rice and peas, for example, provide fiber and plant-based protein. When paired with grilled meats rather than fried options, the meal can be quite satisfying without feeling overwhelming. Of course, like any comfort food, moderation matters.

There are a few limitations worth noting. Seating is minimal, so it’s best suited for takeaway rather than dining in. Also, during peak hours, you might wait a bit longer. However, in my experience, that wait reflects fresh preparation rather than delay.

Over time, I’ve learned that great local restaurants don’t need hype-they need heart, skill, and steady execution. This Scarborough gem delivers on all three. Whether you’re craving authentic jerk, savory curry, or a quick patty on the go, the flavors here feel honest and rooted in tradition. The steady stream of loyal customers and positive community feedback speaks louder than any marketing ever could.

  • Tried their mutton kottu on Friday night and got their weekend special rice today (Sunday) coz the kottu was mind blowing!!! The rice and curry was full of flavour! For 15 dollars you get 5 types of veg curries, a good amount of mutton curry, 2 pieces of fried chicken, a piece of fried dish and a boiled egg too which is more than enough for 2 people.. the mutton kottu too had so much meat in it, you can savour meat in every bite. We asked for extra spicy and wished the kottu was more spicy though definitely will be visiting them frequently to try their other dishes too and I’m so glad to find Sri Lankan food in this area! Also they do carry a stock of Sri Lankan grocery staples too on sale.. so if you need to grab some curry leaves or milk powder or a quick maliban or munchee buiscuit, they got you covered
